This course is designed to give students a basic understanding of addictions and to assist them to recognize the symptoms of addictive behaviour. Students will be given ideas as to how to respond as professionals to the addicted clients they will work with on a day to day basis. Students will learn the services available through AADAC and will be given a number of web sites to assist them to use the internet to research a number of topics. This internet component is included to enable students to begin a lifetime of technological research in the field of addictions.

This course introduces the integration of social work knowledge and concepts with family practice skills. Emphasis will be given to: the nature and structure of family units, roles; understanding and assessing family dynamics; intervention methods for crisis/support; cultural issues; working with the social problems of families; the future of the family.
