In Orientation to Foundational Literacy, students will develop an understanding of adult learning in relation to language and literacy development. Emphasis will be placed on how to engage adult learners and support them with effective and appropriate strategies, assessments, and goal setting relevant to enhancing and supporting language and literacy. Students will also develop an understanding of the barriers and reasons contributing to language and literacy skill deficits and how background and linguistic experiences contribute to personal attitudes towards language and literacy.

In Number Concepts and Operations, CALP staff will develop an understanding of the skills and strategies necessary to effectively support teaching foundational concepts and understandings to adult learners. Emphasis will be placed on the teaching of early numeracy skills including counting, subitizing, basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), place value, and comparing quantities. CALP staff will enhance their repertoire of strategies, representations, and assessments that can be used to support adult learners as well as show ways to connect understandings and skills to daily life.
